Key takeaways

  • Gutanbac Shrine is on the eastern Great Sky Island, between the entrances to the Bottomless Cave area and south-east of the Temple of Time.
  • It is normally reached during the early main quest after Link has begun exploring the Great Sky Island and has access to the preceding abilities.
  • The shrine grants Ascend, not merely demonstrates it.
  • There are two treasure chests inside one containing a Stone Axe and one containing a Construct Bow.
  • The only standard enemy inside is a Soldier Construct I.
  • After completing the shrine, Ascend can be used outside to reach the nearby upper route, including the Wing launch area used to travel back towards the Temple of Time.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the shrine’s puzzle, its treasure chests, the Ascend ability and its immediate Great Sky Island connections.

Overview

Gutanbac Shrine, formally associated with the shrine trial “The Ability to Rise”, is a Shrine of Light in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is located on the eastern side of the Great Sky Island, in the island’s snowy upper region, south-east of the Temple of Time. Unlike a conventional combat shrine, Gutanbac Shrine is primarily a tutorial for Ascend, one of Link’s core abilities. The entire interior is designed around identifying usable ceilings, climbing through solid structures and timing Ascend with moving platforms.

The shrine is important for two reasons. First, it grants Ascend, which allows Link to pass upwards through suitable ceilings and emerge on top of them. Secondly, it forms part of the intended early-game route through the Great Sky Island. Completing it gives Link another Light of Blessing and brings him closer to having the abilities and progression needed to reach the Temple of Time.

Location and boundaries

The shrine itself

Gutanbac Shrine is a self-contained Shrine of Light. Its interior consists of several vertical chambers, ledges, ceilings and platforms arranged as a controlled introduction to Ascend. The shrine should not be confused with the wider snowy section of the Great Sky Island outside it. The nearby caves, Zonai device facilities, Wing launch route and cold-weather exploration area are connected in progression terms, but they are not part of the shrine interior.

The entrance stands in the eastern part of the Garden of Time area of the Great Sky Island, between entrances to the Bottomless Cave. The shrine is positioned on a snowy high point, so the approach may require cold resistance or careful use of warm food and clothing, depending on the route taken. The shrine’s interior is not itself a broad open-world region, and its puzzle rooms should be treated separately from the surrounding island.

Immediate exterior connections

The area outside Gutanbac Shrine contains routes leading through the snowy eastern part of the Great Sky Island. Once Ascend has been obtained, Link can use it to climb through suitable ceilings and reach otherwise awkward upper paths. One particularly important connection lies beyond the shrine: a route involving a hollow tree or trunk, Zonai devices and a Wing launch strip. From there, Link can use a Wing to travel back towards the Temple of Time. Nintendo’s own early-game guide specifically identifies the route from Gutanbac Shrine to the Wing and explains that the Wing is placed into the track before launch.

Named places within the relevant scope

The following names belong to the shrine or its immediate progression context. They should not be treated as interchangeable areas.

The Temple of Time, Bottomless Cave and the wider Great Sky Island are neighbouring or connected locations, not rooms within Gutanbac Shrine.

Access and progression requirements

Gutanbac Shrine is encountered during the Great Sky Island opening sequence. It is intended to be completed after Link has already begun the island’s shrine circuit and acquired earlier abilities. The game’s early route encourages the player to visit the first shrines, return to Rauru and then proceed towards the snowy eastern area.

The shrine’s main progression requirement is effectively access to the Great Sky Island’s early-game route, rather than a late-game item. Once Link reaches the entrance, the shrine itself supplies the ability needed for its puzzles.

You do not need a specialised inventory to complete the shrine, but the following make the approach easier:

The cold-weather requirement belongs primarily to the surrounding island. The shrine puzzle itself is not a prolonged environmental survival challenge.

Shrine walkthrough: The Ability to Rise

1. Receive Ascend

Enter the shrine and walk forward. A scene introduces Link to the Ascend ability.

Ascend allows Link to rise through a suitable solid surface above him and emerge on the upper side. Nintendo describes the ability as allowing Link to pass through solid objects overhead, while the shrine teaches the player to look for usable ceilings rather than simply searching for stairs or ladders.

Activate Ascend and aim at the ceiling or overhead ledge. When the target surface is valid, the game displays the Ascend portal. Confirm the move to pass through and emerge on the higher level.

2. Collect the Stone Axe

After the first ascent, look for the smaller raised block or ledge on the left side of the room.

This chest contains a Stone Axe. It is not required to complete every later step if the player already has a suitable cutting weapon, but it is a useful early-game tool and reinforces the shrine’s reward structure.

3. Ascend through the taller structure

Drop back down and move beneath the taller pillar or raised block. Use Ascend again to reach the upper level.

This step teaches an important distinction: not every visible ledge is the final destination. Some surfaces are simply intermediate platforms that let Link reposition himself for the next ascent.

4. Defeat the Soldier Construct

A Soldier Construct I occupies the next area.

You can defeat it with ordinary melee attacks, ranged attacks or environmental positioning. If using a bow, aiming at its eye is an effective way to stagger it. The enemy is not a shrine boss and does not trigger a separate boss reward.

Enemy directory

After the fight, search the room rather than immediately moving towards the exit. The second chest is hidden behind a blocked opening.

5. Break the wooden crates

On the right side of the chamber, two wooden crates block a small recess or alcove.

Destroy the crates with a weapon. An axe is convenient, but any suitable weapon can break them. Once the opening is clear, move inside and look upwards.

6. Collect the Construct Bow

Use Ascend through the ceiling of the newly opened alcove. This leads to an upper ledge containing the second chest.

Open it to obtain a Construct Bow. This is a fixed shrine reward, not a random drop.

7. Drop the suspended slab

Return to the lower part of the chamber. Ahead is a broad stone slab or platform suspended by two ropes.

Cut both ropes using a bladed weapon or an arrow. The slab drops and forms a usable bridge or ramp. Nintendo’s guidance specifically notes that the ropes can be cut with a bladed weapon or an arrow.

Do not try to jump directly to the highest point. The intended solution is to use the fallen slab as an intermediate platform.

8. Ascend through the slab

Stand underneath the fallen slab and activate Ascend. Rise through it to reach the top.

This is the shrine’s clearest demonstration of Ascend as a vertical traversal tool. The ability is not limited to permanent architecture. A suitable slab or platform can also become a route upwards when positioned above Link.

9. Use the moving platform

The final section contains a moving platform travelling along the shrine’s wall or vertical route.

The timing window is forgiving. If the platform moves out of position, wait for its next pass rather than attempting a risky jump.

10. Claim the Light of Blessing

After the final ascent, follow the short path to the altar and interact with the terminal in front of the statue.

The reward is one Light of Blessing. Four Lights of Blessing can later be exchanged at a Goddess Statue for either a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel.

Completion directory

There is no conventional shrine boss, no hidden combat trial and no additional completion mode inside Gutanbac Shrine.

Enemies, hazards and practical advice

Soldier Construct I

The Soldier Construct is the only standard enemy listed within the shrine. It is positioned after the initial Ascend tutorial and before the crate alcove. Defeating it is not mechanically complicated, but early-game players may have limited weapons and shields.

Falling and failed Ascend attempts

The main hazards are positional rather than environmental:

Ascend does not remove the need to look carefully at the ceiling. If no valid portal appears, reposition Link directly beneath the surface or search for a thinner, flatter or more central section of the overhead structure.

Cold outside the shrine

The exterior eastern Great Sky Island route is snowy and cold. Players may need cold resistance while travelling to or from the shrine. Early options include warm food, cold-resistant clothing and careful route planning. The Archaic Warm Greaves can be found elsewhere on the Great Sky Island’s early route, but they are not a reward from Gutanbac Shrine itself.

---

Nearby connections after completion

Gutanbac Shrine is more than an isolated puzzle room. Completing it changes how Link can navigate the surrounding island because Ascend opens routes that were previously inaccessible or inefficient.

Wing launch route

From the shrine’s exterior, move along the nearby upper route and look for a place where Ascend can take Link through the landscape. This leads towards a hollow tree or trunk and a Zonai device area containing Wings and a launch track.

The Wing eventually disappears after a limited period, so it is best to launch only when ready. Keeping Link near the middle helps maintain a straight flight path, while shifting towards either side turns the device.

Great Sky Island shrine circuit

Gutanbac Shrine is one of the early ability shrines on the Great Sky Island. It should be understood as part of the island’s connected tutorial route rather than as a completely optional late-game shrine. Its position and reward are designed to let Link reach higher areas and continue the island’s progression.

Comprehensive named directory

Characters and entities

The Maker Construct and the Zonai device dispenser belong to the surrounding Great Sky Island progression route, not to the interior of Gutanbac Shrine. The Rauru and Sonia Statue is located at the shrine’s completion altar. The shrine does not contain ordinary residents, travelling merchants, a faction headquarters, law enforcement or a business district.

Lore and design significance

Gutanbac Shrine introduces one of *Tears of the Kingdom*’s defining movement mechanics. Earlier tutorial shrines teach construction and weapon fusion, while Gutanbac teaches the player to read the vertical space above Link. Its rooms deliberately repeat the same idea in increasingly flexible forms:

This progression explains why Ascend is useful without presenting it as a single-purpose key. Nintendo describes Ascend as a way to pass through solid objects and create shortcuts, and Gutanbac Shrine gives the player a controlled series of examples before the ability becomes part of open-world exploration.

The shrine’s completion altar uses a Rauru and Sonia Statue, consistent with the sacred architecture found throughout the game’s Shrines of Light. The Light of Blessing is therefore both a completion reward and part of the broader Heart and Stamina progression system.

Missability and progression changes

Can the shrine be missed?

No permanent shrine reward is normally missable. The shrine can be completed later if the player leaves the Great Sky Island and returns. The Stone Axe, Construct Bow, Ascend ability and Light of Blessing are fixed parts of the shrine’s content.

The intended early-game order may vary in practice, but Gutanbac Shrine is designed to be visited during the Great Sky Island sequence. Glitches, sequence breaks and unconventional movement methods are separate from the base-game route and are not necessary for completion.

What changes after completion?
