Key takeaways
- Gerudo province has two major surface regions the hot Gerudo Desert and the colder Gerudo Highlands.
- Gerudo Town is not the only settlement Kara Kara Bazaar, Gerudo Canyon Stable, the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower and several small shops or service points are also part of the province’s travel network.
- The main regional story is Riju of Gerudo Town, which culminates in the Lightning Temple and unlocks Riju’s sage ability.
- The sandstorm around Gerudo Town disrupts the Purah Pad map and makes direct navigation difficult until the regional story progresses.
- The desert’s heat and cold are both serious hazards Use heat-resistant clothing or food by day, and cold resistance after sunset and in the highlands.
- Several apparently minor sites, including the Gerudo Desert Gateway, the Gerudo Great Skeleton, the Statue of the Eighth Heroine and the Ancient Altar Ruins, are relevant to map completion, quests or unique rewards.
About this guide
Scope note: This guide covers the whole Gerudo province in the base game, not merely Gerudo Town or the open desert. It includes the surface regions of Gerudo Desert and Gerudo Highlands, their associated sky areas and Depths regions, and the named settlements, ruins, caves, mines and facilities directly connected with them. Neighbouring Hebra, Central Hyrule and Faron locations are mentioned only where they provide routes or context. The province is divided by the game’s location hierarchy into Gerudo Desert, Gerudo Highlands, Gerudo Desert Sky, Gerudo Highlands Sky, Gerudo Desert Depths and Gerudo Highlands Depths. This is broader than the desert around Gerudo Town alone.
Overview
Gerudo is the south-western province of Hyrule, a large territory of deserts, mesas, canyons and cold mountain ranges. It is one of the four regions involved in the Regional Phenomena story, and its main narrative centre is Gerudo Town, home of Chief Riju and the Gerudo people.
The province is deliberately varied. The low desert has blistering daytime heat, freezing nights, sandstorms and poor visibility. The highlands are cold, mountainous and full of caves, cliffs and Yiga activity. Beneath both areas lies a substantial section of the Depths, including abandoned mines, a giant Gerudo skeleton and the Abandoned Gerudo Mine. Above the surface are several sky archipelagos and the labyrinth known as South Lomei Castle.
Gerudo is therefore best approached as a province rather than a single destination. Gerudo Town is important, but it is only one part of a much larger exploration area.
Included surface regions
Gerudo Desert
The desert is the area most players mean when they say “Gerudo”, but it is only one half of the surface province.
Gerudo Highlands
The highlands rise around the northern and western sides of the desert. They include snowy peaks, narrow valleys and large cliff systems such as:
The highlands are colder than the desert and should not be treated as a simple extension of the sandy region.
Gerudo Desert: This is the broad sandy basin containing
Associated sky and Depths regions
For a full province guide, the following should be treated as connected but separate map layers:
The sky regions include the East Gerudo Sky Archipelago, North Gerudo Sky Archipelago, Starview Island and South Lomei Castle Top Floor. The Depths contain several mines, coliseums, skeletons and lightroots corresponding broadly to surface geography.

Desert heat and night-time cold
Gerudo’s most important survival rule is that the desert’s temperature changes sharply.
During the day, Link can suffer from extreme heat. At night, the same desert becomes cold enough to require cold resistance. This makes a single outfit insufficient for a long expedition. Carry at least one heat-resistant meal or elixir, one cold-resistant meal or elixir and, ideally, matching armour pieces.
Heat-resistant equipment includes the Desert Voe set and other suitable climate-resistant gear. Cold resistance is more useful in the highlands, where the temperature remains low even during the day.
Gerudo Town and Kara Kara Bazaar provide useful preparation points before crossing the desert. The region’s extreme temperatures are also part of the game’s environmental storytelling, reflecting the harsh conditions that shape Gerudo travel and culture.
Sandstorms
The large sandstorm surrounding Gerudo Town interferes with the Purah Pad’s map and makes ordinary navigation unreliable. The safest early route is to travel from Kara Kara Bazaar towards the town while using visible landmarks, elevated terrain, towers and the town’s walls as reference points. Nintendo Life also notes that the map becomes unusable within the sandstorm and recommends preparing for both the heat and the difficult approach.
The storm is not simply a weather effect. It is tied to the regional crisis and changes as the Gerudo story progresses.
Quicksand
Quicksand appears throughout the desert. It can slow or swallow Link, and some sinkholes act as entrances to caves or hidden ruins. The most important example is the route into the Ancient Prison Ruins, which leads to Chichim Shrine. The shrine is reached by falling through quicksand in the Palu Wasteland area.
Do not assume every sand whirlpool is merely an environmental obstacle. Mark suspicious sinkholes and investigate them with the paraglider, Ascend and sufficient stamina.
Lightning and storm conditions
The Gerudo regional phenomenon produces dangerous lightning conditions. Metal weapons, shields and bows can attract strikes, so players should switch to non-metal equipment or remove metallic gear when lightning begins. Riju’s ability later becomes central to combating enemies and completing the Lightning Temple.
Gibdo
Gibdo dominate much of the regional crisis. Ordinary weapons are inefficient against them until they are exposed to an elemental effect. Fire, shock and other elemental attacks can make them vulnerable, after which normal weapon damage becomes effective.
Prepare elemental arrows before entering Gerudo Town or beginning the regional quest. The town’s defence sequence is considerably easier when every member of the party has access to fire, shock or similar damage.

Route from Lookout Landing
The Gerudo Desert Gateway lies near the transition between Gerudo Canyon, the Gerudo Highlands and the desert. It also connects with the Gerudo Canyon Stable and the road to Kara Kara Bazaar. After the sand shroud is dispelled, a sand-seal rental service becomes available nearby.
The most straightforward approach is
- 01Travel south-west from Lookout Landing.
- 02Pass through Hyrule Field and towards the Gerudo Canyon region.
- 03Activate the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower.
- 04Continue through Gerudo Canyon and along the main road.
- 05Reach the Gerudo Desert Gateway.
- 06Follow the road towards Kara Kara Bazaar.
- 07Use Kara Kara Bazaar as the main preparation point before crossing towards Gerudo Town.
Route from the Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower
The tower is useful for opening the map and identifying the canyon, desert entrance and nearby mountains. It also gives access to the upper cliffs, which are useful when the main road is blocked or when Link needs to avoid enemy groups.
The tower’s area should not be confused with Gerudo Town itself. The canyon is a distinct approach region containing its own stable, caves, Yiga activity and named landmarks.
Route to Gerudo Town before the story
Before completing the regional phenomenon, the sandstorm makes the final approach difficult. Use:
Once inside, speak with the relevant Gerudo characters to begin the regional sequence.
Recommended exploration order
A practical order for a first visit is:
This order keeps the main story accessible while reducing repeated journeys through the sandstorm.

Gerudo Town
Gerudo Town is the principal settlement of the province and sits within the desert. It is primarily inhabited by Gerudo women and serves as the political, military and commercial centre of the region. The town contains the chief’s palace, a barracks, a shelter, shops, a jewellery business, a bar and other facilities.
Unlike in Breath of the Wild, the entry situation in Tears of the Kingdom is shaped by the ongoing crisis. The story gives Link access through his role in helping the Gerudo defend the town rather than making the old disguise method the central requirement.
Gerudo Secret Club
The Secret Club sells specialist clothing, including equipment useful for surviving Gerudo’s climate and moving through restricted areas. Access is obtained by discovering the password through the surrounding town’s conversations and entering through the club’s concealed route.
The password is not something to guess from the shop’s name. Listen to the dialogue around the building, then use the revealed information at the appropriate entrance.
Important Gerudo Town facilities
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Gerudo Shelter | Underground refuge and major story location during the Gibdo crisis. |
| Gerudo Palace | Seat of Chief Riju and location of story conversations and military activity. |
| Gerudo Barracks | Associated with Gerudo soldiers and training. |
| The Noble Canteen | Food and drink establishment. |
| Gerudo Secret Club | Clothing and equipment shop with restricted access. |
| Starlight Memories | Jewellery shop. |
| Hotel Oasis | Accommodation and town service. |
| Gerudo Town general stores | Several named shopkeepers operate general stores or supply businesses. |
| Sand-seal rental services | Used for desert travel and sand-seal activities. |
Kara Kara Bazaar
Kara Kara Bazaar is the main settlement between the Gerudo Canyon approach and Gerudo Town. It is a vital rest point rather than a mere decorative roadside camp.
Kara Kara Bazaar is also a useful place to meet travellers connected with Gerudo’s story and to stock up before the sandstorm crossing.
Gerudo Canyon Stable
The Gerudo Canyon Stable is located before the desert gateway. It is an important approach facility, though its exact role differs from the major town settlements. It provides a stable stop, travellers, side activities and access to the road network connecting Central Hyrule with Gerudo.
The road beyond the stable eventually reaches the Gerudo Desert Gateway. Do not treat the stable as part of Gerudo Town or Kara Kara Bazaar.

Gerudo leadership
Riju’s position reflects the political continuity between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The town remains governed by a Gerudo chief, while the crisis tests both the new chief’s authority and the town’s military organisation.
Gerudo leadership
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Riju | Chief of Gerudo Town and the central figure in the region’s main quest. |
| Buliara | Riju’s bodyguard and a key military presence. |
| Patricia | The chief’s sand seal, associated with information and story progression. |
| Gerudo soldiers | Defend the town and participate in the regional battle. |
Other residents and visitors
Named people associated with Gerudo Town and its immediate surroundings include:
The exact presence and role of some characters varies with story progression. The directory above includes residents, visiting characters and people recorded in connection with Gerudo Town, rather than claiming that all remain permanently inside the town at every stage. The town’s broader character listing is documented in the Gerudo Town location directory.
Yiga Clan
The Yiga have a significant presence in the Gerudo Highlands. Their most important regional location is the Yiga Blademaster Station, connected with caves and highland routes. The Yiga are not part of Gerudo society, but their bases, disguises and missions make them a recurring threat.
If exploring the highlands, watch for suspicious travellers, isolated structures and apparent treasure opportunities. Yiga encounters can change after the player interacts with their organisation’s missions elsewhere in Hyrule.

Starting the regional story
The Gerudo regional phenomenon is one of the four Regional Phenomena. Once the player reaches Gerudo Town, the town is dealing with Gibdo attacks, sandstorms and the disappearance or isolation of important characters.
The quest develops through the following broad stages:
Starting the regional story: steps
- 01Reach Gerudo Town through the sandstorm.
- 02Enter the shelter and investigate the situation.
- 03Find Riju and assist with the immediate defence.
- 04Explore the ruins and investigate the electrical or lightning-related clues.
- 05Follow the red-pillar and desert-light puzzle sequence.
- 06Defend Gerudo Town from the Gibdo assault.
- 07Enter the Lightning Temple.
- 08Activate the temple’s power sources.
- 09Defeat Queen Gibdo.
- 10Receive Riju’s vow and lightning ability.
The Gerudo Town defence
The defence is easier if the player prepares first:
During the battle, Riju’s lightning field is the key tactical tool. Keep enemies inside the field and fire an arrow at the target to trigger the lightning strike. Prioritise enemies threatening the town’s entrances and keep moving between attack points.
Lightning Temple
The Lightning Temple is a large dungeon in the desert region. It uses light, electricity, mirrors, vertical movement and battery-powered mechanisms. The temple is best explored methodically rather than by rushing towards the visible central objective.
Queen Gibdo is vulnerable to Riju’s lightning, which removes her protective state. Once exposed, attack with ordinary weapons while avoiding her charge, projectile attacks and sand-based area attacks.
Completing the temple removes the regional crisis and grants Riju’s sage ability for later use.
---
The following directory consolidates named surface locations associated with Gerudo province. It is grouped by landscape rather than by importance.
The most reliable approach is
- 01Identify the central structure and available lift routes.
- 02Search each floor for a power source.
- 03Use Ultrahand, Recall, Ascend and the temple’s light mechanisms as required.
- 04Keep anti-Gibdo elemental options available.
- 05Mark unopened doors and inaccessible power rooms.
- 06Return to the central area after each activation.
Highland landmarks
The province-level location directory records these landmarks separately from settlements, sky locations, Depths locations, caves and chasms.
Important ruins and monuments
Statue of the Eighth Heroine
The statue is associated with Gerudo history and the region’s earlier heroic tradition. Its cave and surrounding highland routes are distinct map locations. The area is particularly useful for players interested in the Gerudo side content connected with the Seven Heroines and the Eighth Heroine.
Ancient Altar Ruins
These ruins extend beneath the eastern desert and contain multiple entrances. They are easy to underestimate because the surface entrances are spread across a large area. Players pursuing map completion should check every entrance rather than assuming that one visit registers the whole complex.
Ancient Prison Ruins
These lie beneath the desert and are accessed through quicksand. The ruins contain Chichim Shrine, which is a Rauru’s Blessing shrine once reached. The challenge is primarily the route and environmental navigation rather than a traditional shrine puzzle.
---
Cave directory
The cave list should be checked independently from the outdoor landmark list. In particular, the Ancient Altar Ruins, Gerudo Great Skeleton and Yiga Blademaster Station are not interchangeable with the surface locations above them.
Chasm directory
Chasms are useful entry points into the Depths, but they are not automatically the safest route. Bring Brightbloom Seeds, healing items and equipment capable of dealing with gloom-affected enemies.
---
The sky archipelagos contain shrine challenges, Zonai devices, treasure and routes towards labyrinth areas. Some are most easily reached from a Skyview Tower, while others require launching from nearby islands or using devices assembled on the surface.
South Lomei Castle Top Floor is part of the larger labyrinth sequence. It should be distinguished from the surface labyrinth and from the Depths area beneath it.
---
The Depths beneath Gerudo are not simply a second version of the surface desert. They contain their own enemies, resources, lightroots, mines and rewards.
Named Depths directory
The Abandoned Gerudo Mine is particularly significant because it broadly corresponds to Gerudo Town’s position on the surface. The mine and other abandoned extraction sites reinforce the relationship between surface settlements and the industrial remains below Hyrule.
The Desert Coliseum is a combat challenge location. Enter prepared for successive enemy encounters rather than treating it as a normal ruin.
The Gerudo Dark Skeleton is one of the large fossil landmarks in the Depths. These skeleton sites are useful for orientation and often contain enemies, resources or nearby lightroots.
---
Gerudo contains a substantial number of shrines across the desert, highlands and caves. Their distribution includes:
Shrine directories commonly divide Gerudo entries by the exact map region and provide coordinates or approach notes.
For practical exploration, activate every shrine you pass even if you do not complete it immediately. The desert’s poor visibility and the highlands’ vertical terrain make fast travel especially valuable.
Korok Seeds
Korok puzzles are distributed through roads, cliffs, ruins, rock formations and isolated desert landmarks. Common patterns include:
Do not regard a named landmark as fully explored after finding its shrine or treasure. Korok puzzles frequently sit on its outer cliffs or on a nearby ledge.
---
Desert and approach
The shop directory distinguishes actual service locations from decorative buildings and named settlement areas. The province category records the principal businesses and service points separately.

Province completion

Is Gerudo Town the same as Gerudo Desert?
No. Gerudo Town is a settlement within the larger Gerudo Desert. The desert also contains Kara Kara Bazaar, ruins, skeletons, caves, shrines, the Southern Oasis, the East and West Barrens and several other named landmarks.
Does Gerudo include the Gerudo Highlands?
Yes, at province level. The game separately identifies Gerudo Desert and Gerudo Highlands, but both belong to the wider Gerudo province.
Can Link enter Gerudo Town immediately?
He can reach it early, but the approach is difficult because of the sandstorm and the regional crisis. The story path is designed around helping Riju and the Gerudo rather than repeating the exact disguise-based entry structure from Breath of the Wild.
What is the best way to cross the desert?
Use Kara Kara Bazaar as your preparation point, carry climate-resistance supplies, activate shrines and follow visible landmarks. A sand seal is useful once the relevant rental service is available.
Why is my map blank in the Gerudo storm?
The sandstorm interferes with the Purah Pad map. Navigate by landmarks, roads and the town’s visible structures until the regional story changes the situation.
Where is the hardest-to-find shrine in the desert?
Chichim Shrine is a common omission because it is hidden beneath quicksand in the Ancient Prison Ruins. It is not found by simply searching the visible desert surface.

This guide uses the game’s province and region hierarchy, a location-category directory and specialist shrine and route guides. The named-location directories are substantially consolidated, but a literal 100% collectible directory would require a dedicated interactive-map comparison for every Korok, Bubbul Gem, treasure chest, well, lightroot and device dispenser. Those individual placements are not reproduced here.
Some character lists combine permanent residents, visiting characters and progression-dependent appearances. They should not be read as proof that every named character is present in Gerudo Town at all times.
The main source directory also contains some legacy or cross-game naming, such as locations identified with Breath of the Wild in their page titles. Those names have been retained only where the location is also relevant to Tears of the Kingdom, and neighbouring provinces have not been folded into Gerudo merely because they are reached by the same road.
