Overview

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Base game

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Base game

Introduction

Ren-iz Shrine is a Shrine of Light in the Crenel Hills area of Hyrule Field. Its trial, “Jump the Gaps”, is a compact Ultrahand puzzle built around rolling spherical objects across gaps. Rather than using combat or a special shrine quest, Link must repeatedly reconfigure metal platforms into ramps and bridges.

The shrine is found on the upper slopes of Crenel Hills, north-east of Lookout Landing and east of Hyrule Castle. Its location is easy to spot from the surrounding hills because the shrine stands among the region’s large, weathered tree-stump formations. Published map references place it at approximately 0755, 0823, 0082, although some databases record the shrine’s entrance or internal elevation slightly differently, including 0756, 0824, 0096.

Ren-iz is an especially useful early or mid-game shrine because it rewards careful manipulation rather than advanced combat equipment. It also contains a Strong Zonaite Shield, a useful piece of Zonai equipment that reduces the energy consumption of an attached Zonai device.

Location and boundaries

Crenel Hills

Ren-iz Shrine belongs to the Crenel Hills area rather than to Lookout Landing, Hyrule Castle or a separate cave system. Crenel Hills is a rugged upland zone north-east of Lookout Landing. The landscape is marked by steep grassy slopes, exposed rock and enormous tree-stump formations.

The shrine stands near the upper part of the hills. From Lookout Landing, the most direct broad route is north-east, crossing the river and continuing towards the uplands. Several guides describe the shrine as being close to the peak or upper slopes of Crenel Hills.

Included area

For the purposes of this guide, Ren-iz Shrine means:

The wider Crenel Hills landscape is treated as the shrine’s surrounding region, not as part of the shrine itself. Nearby Hyrule Field locations, roads, enemies and other shrines are separate places and are not included in the shrine’s internal directory.

Access and approach

Ren-iz Shrine has no reported shrine quest or special activation condition. Once Link reaches the shrine’s exterior and examines it, it becomes available as a fast-travel point.

Suggested route from Lookout Landing

The exact approach can vary because the surrounding hills are open terrain. A paraglider launch from a nearby height is useful for confirming the shrine’s position and avoiding unnecessary climbing. A guide from GameWith specifically recommends travelling north-east from the Lookout Landing Skyview Tower, crossing the river and climbing towards the hilltop.

Useful preparation

No special armour, weapon, meal or quest item is needed. The important requirement is access to Ultrahand, which is obtained during the opening section of the game.

Suggested route from Lookout Landing

  1. 01
Leave Lookout Landing and travel north-east.
  2. 02
Continue towards the Hyrule Field highlands and the Crenel Hills.
  3. 03
Cross the river on the way to the hills. A bridge or an improvised crossing can be used, depending on the route taken.
  4. 04
Climb the slopes towards the upper part of Crenel Hills.
  5. 05
Look for the shrine among the large tree-stump formations.
  6. 06
Activate the shrine before entering if you want it registered as a fast-travel location.

Shrine layout

Ren-iz contains two main puzzle rooms followed by the altar chamber.

The puzzle is based on the same basic principle in both rooms: a sphere rolls down a slope, travels across a platform and must be sent over a gap into a receptacle. Correct placement matters more than force or timing.

Walkthrough

First room: create the first ramp

The key is to avoid leaving the platform flat on the floor. It must act as an inclined ramp. If the sphere falls short, move the platform closer to the edge or increase its angle. Several walkthroughs describe this first arrangement as a simple metal-board ramp that sends the sphere into the socket across the gap.

Second room: collect the chest

After the first gate opens, enter the second room. This area contains two loose metal pieces:

The treasure chest is positioned across a gap to the side of the room.

The chest contains a Strong Zonaite Shield. The shield has a base guard value of 26 and lowers the energy consumption of an attached Zonai device.

Second room: build the final launch ramp

The same two platforms are needed for the second sphere, so do not leave them permanently arranged as a bridge.

The arrangement does not need to match a single exact orientation. What matters is that the long platform gives the sphere a usable incline and the upper end points towards the target. The platform should be supported rather than simply laid flat.

First room: create the first ramp

  1. 01
Enter the shrine and examine the first room.
  2. 02
Locate the metal platform on the floor.
  3. 03
Use Ultrahand to lift the platform.
  4. 04
Place it at an angle so that it forms a ramp or launch surface beside the gap.
  5. 05
Position the lower end carefully. It should provide a smooth route from the rolling path towards the receptacle on the far side.
  6. 06
Strike the glowing yellow switch or pillar.
  7. 07
The sphere rolls down the existing slope, travels onto your metal platform and jumps across the gap.
  8. 08
If it lands in the socket, the gate opens.

Second room: collect the chest

  1. 01
Use Ultrahand to attach the square platform to the long platform.
  2. 02
Make the resulting structure as straight and level as possible.
  3. 03
Lift it into position over the gap.
  4. 04
    Use it as a bridge.
  5. 05
Cross to the chest and open it.

Second room: build the final launch ramp

  1. 01
Bring the combined platform back to the main side of the room.
  2. 02
Separate the two pieces using Ultrahand.
  3. 03
Reattach the smaller square platform to the long platform at a right angle.
  4. 04
Position the smaller piece so that it supports the long platform and creates a steep ramp.
  5. 05
Place the structure at the edge of the rolling path.
  6. 06
    Strike the glowing switch.
  7. 07
The second sphere rolls down the slope, travels up your constructed ramp and jumps across the gap.
  8. 08
Make small adjustments if necessary. The ramp must be close enough to the edge and angled towards the receptacle.
  9. 09
Once the sphere lands in the socket, the final gate opens.

Complete the shrine

  1. 01
    Go through the opened gate.
  2. 02
Climb the steps towards the altar.
  3. 03
Examine the altar to receive the Light of Blessing.
  4. 04
Ren-iz Shrine is then complete and remains available as a fast-travel point.

Items and rewards directory

Shrine treasure

The shield is a fixed shrine reward rather than a random drop. Some online guides incorrectly or inconsistently label the chest contents as a Mighty Zonaite Shield, but the shrine-specific listings in Zelda Dungeon, Kiranico and GameWith identify the item as a Strong Zonaite Shield.

Completion reward

The Light of Blessing is awarded from the altar after the second sphere has reached its receptacle. It is not obtained from the chest.

Puzzle objects

These objects are fixed parts of the shrine’s layout. They are not randomised and are not carried into the overworld after completion.

Practical puzzle tips

Centre the launch

The sphere usually needs a clean, central line towards the receptacle. If it clips the side of the platform, move the structure so that the sphere meets the middle of the ramp.

Use Ultrahand positioning rather than repeated striking

There is no need to hit the sphere manually. The glowing switch releases it automatically once the ramp is in place.

Reuse the platforms

The second room deliberately uses the same two platforms twice:

If the pieces are attached in an inconvenient orientation, separate them and rebuild them rather than trying to force the existing structure into position.

Do not overlook the chest

The chest is in the second room, before the final ramp solution. It is possible to solve the main route and leave without collecting it, so check the side platform before entering the altar chamber.

Nearby connections

Lookout Landing

Lookout Landing is the most useful settlement reference point for reaching Ren-iz Shrine. The shrine lies north-east of the settlement, across the Hyrule Field terrain and river crossings. It is also a practical place to prepare before the journey, although the shrine itself does not require any item or service from Lookout Landing.

Hyrule Field

Ren-iz Shrine is classified with the Hyrule Field surface shrines in several map directories. The surrounding Crenel Hills should not be confused with Hyrule Castle grounds or the nearby Central Hyrule settlements.

Zi-ner Lightroot

The shrine has a corresponding Depths location, Zi-ner Lightroot. This is a map relationship between the surface shrine and the Depths, not an internal subarea of Ren-iz Shrine. Activating one location can help with orientation when exploring the corresponding vertical area, but the Lightroot remains a separate location in a separate game layer.

Lore and series context

Ren-iz is a Tears of the Kingdom Shrine of Light and does not have a known recurring appearance as the same named shrine in an earlier Zelda game. Its trial reflects the game’s emphasis on Zonai-era construction and physics-based problem solving. The puzzle’s use of plain metal platforms is notably different from shrines that focus on combat, elemental interactions or one of Link’s four primary abilities.

The shrine’s title, Jump the Gaps, accurately describes both stages of the trial. In each room, the player must convert a simple platform into a launch ramp capable of sending a sphere across open space.
