About this guide

Scope note: This guide covers In-isa Shrine itself, including its entrance and internal rooms. It does not treat the whole Great Sky Island, Garden of Time, Pondside Cave or nearby tutorial routes as part of the shrine. Those neighbouring areas are included only where they affect access, progression or navigation.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Base game guide Trial: The Ability to Combine

Introduction

In-isa Shrine is a Shrine of Light on the southern side of the Great Sky Island, in the island’s Garden of Time area. It is one of the three shrines required during the early main quest The Closed Door, and the second of the Great Sky Island’s tutorial shrines in the usual progression order.

The shrine introduces Fuse, one of Link’s central abilities in Tears of the Kingdom. Inside, the player learns to combine a weapon with a boulder, attach a Fire Fruit to an arrow and improve a shield with a nearby object. The trial is deliberately compact, but it establishes mechanics that remain important for the entire game: breaking stone barriers, manipulating elemental effects, increasing weapon durability and adapting equipment to different enemies.

In-isa Shrine is not a dungeon with a large overworld settlement or a branching subregion. Its meaningful internal structure consists of a small sequence of connected puzzle and combat rooms, with two treasure chests, one required enemy encounter and a final altar.

Location and boundaries

In-isa Shrine is on the Great Sky Island, rather than in Hyrule’s surface world or the Depths. More specifically, it is in the southwestern portion of the island’s Garden of Time. The entrance is reached from the southern lake-and-raft route after the player has completed or passed through Ukouh Shrine, the shrine that teaches Ultrahand.

The Temple of Time, Ukouh Shrine, Gutanbac Shrine, Nachoyah Shrine, the large lake and Pondside Cave are nearby or connected through the Great Sky Island’s tutorial progression, but they are not subareas of In-isa Shrine.

Not included as shrine interior

The shrine’s placement and internal layout are described consistently as a southwestern Garden of Time location on Great Sky Island.

Access and approach

Quest requirement

In-isa Shrine becomes relevant during The Closed Door, after Link reaches the Temple of Time and learns that the powers in his Right Arm must be restored. Rauru directs Link towards the shrines on Great Sky Island, and In-isa is one of the shrines needed for that early progression.

The shrine itself does not require the player to complete Ukouh Shrine first in the strict sense of entering the door, but the normal route strongly assumes that Link has obtained Ultrahand. Ultrahand is used to cross gaps and build a raft on the way to the shrine.

Route from Ukouh Shrine

The route is part of the Great Sky Island tutorial rather than part of the shrine itself. Nintendo Life’s walkthrough describes the sequence as a series of Ultrahand bridges followed by a sail raft across the lake.

Practical preparation

No special armour, food or upgraded equipment is needed. Before entering, it is useful to have:

The shrine supplies the key tools required for its puzzles, so arriving with powerful equipment is unnecessary.

---

Route from Ukouh Shrine

  1. 01
Leave Ukouh Shrine and descend towards the western side of the nearby platform.
  2. 02
Use wooden planks to make a bridge across the first gap.
  3. 03
Continue across the small connected sky-island sections.
  4. 04
Build another bridge, usually from logs, to cross the next gap.
  5. 05
Follow the route south towards the large lake.
  6. 06
At the lake, use logs and a sail to build a raft.
  7. 07
Cross the water, then follow the path towards the stairs on the far side.
  8. 08
Climb the stairs to reach the glowing entrance of In-isa Shrine.

Geography and internal layout

In-isa Shrine is a linear tutorial shrine with a small number of connected spaces.

Main internal areas

The shrine’s visual language is based around materials that can be combined. Boulder-covered weapons break stone. Fire Fruit ignites dry foliage. The combat room presents an enemy that uses Fuse itself, showing that the mechanic is not only a puzzle tool.

The final room contains the shrine terminal and a statue of Rauru and Sonia. Interacting with the terminal grants the Light of Blessing after the trial is complete.

Walkthrough

1. Receive Fuse

At the shrine entrance, approach the green terminal. A spirit manifestation of Rauru appears and grants Link the Fuse ability.

Fuse allows Link to attach nearby objects and materials to:

The attachment changes the resulting equipment. The game uses the first room to demonstrate weapon fusion immediately.

2. Make the Boulder Hammer

The fused weapon is much more suitable for breaking rock than the unfused claymore. Strike the cracked wall until it collapses, opening the route to the next section.

A fused weapon can be separated later, but removing the fused material destroys the attached object. For this shrine, there is little reason to remove the boulder from the claymore before the trial ends.

3. Collect the bow and Fire Fruits

Beyond the first cracked barrier, the route divides.

Collect Fire Fruits from the nearby trees. The shrine provides enough material for the intended solution, and there are also stationary torches in the area if the player needs an alternative way to ignite the foliage.

4. Burn the foliage and claim the Small Key

The Fire Fruit ignites the foliage. The wooden chest on the shelf drops down, allowing Link to open it.

The chest contains the Small Key. This is the required key for the locked door at the junction.

If the player has difficulty using Fire Fruit with arrows, the room also contains fixed torches that can provide fire. However, the Fire Fruit-and-arrow solution is the shrine’s intended demonstration of arrow fusion.

5. Find the optional Arrow chest

Before using the Small Key, inspect the area around the locked door.

A cracked stone pillar stands to the left of the stairs leading towards the door. Use the Boulder Hammer to destroy it. This reveals access to a second treasure chest containing:

This chest is optional. It is useful because the shrine has just taught arrow fusion, but it is not required to open the locked door or finish the trial.

6. Open the locked door

Return to the locked green door and interact with it while the Small Key is in Link’s inventory. The door opens into the shrine’s combat section.

Fuse weapon → break wall → burn foliage → obtain Small Key → open locked door

7. Defeat the Captain Construct

The next room contains one Captain Construct I. It can use Fuse, including attaching a rock to its weapon to create a rock-based hammer.

The arena contains several objects and materials that can be fused to equipment. It is designed to let the player experiment rather than forcing one exact combat method.

Safe approach

The Captain Construct has more durability than the earlier Great Sky Island constructs, but it is still a tutorial encounter. Ranged attacks are a particularly safe option, while a fused melee weapon provides the quickest close-range solution.

8. Break the final stone barrier

After defeating the Captain Construct, use the Boulder Hammer or another suitable rock-fused weapon on the remaining cracked stone barrier.

The room contains additional objects and materials, so the original Boulder Hammer is not the only possible solution. The important requirement is that the weapon has a rock or similarly suitable material attached to it.

9. Claim the Light of Blessing

Follow the stairs beyond the broken barrier to the final chamber.

The shrine’s final chamber contains a Rauru-and-Sonia statue. The Light of Blessing is the permanent shrine reward and counts towards the four required to exchange for a heart container or stamina increase at a Goddess Statue.

The game also preserves the Fuse ability after the shrine is completed.

2. Make the Boulder Hammer

  1. 01
Pick up the Rusty Claymore near the entrance.
  2. 02
Activate the ability wheel and select Fuse.
  3. 03
Aim at one of the nearby boulders.
  4. 04
Fuse the boulder to the Rusty Claymore.
  5. 05
Use the resulting Boulder Hammer against the cracked stone barrier.

4. Burn the foliage and claim the Small Key

  1. 01
    Equip the Old Wooden Bow.
  2. 02
    Draw an arrow.
  3. 03
Fuse a Fire Fruit to the arrow.
  4. 04
Aim at the dry foliage covering the high shelf.
  5. 05
    Fire the fused arrow.

9. Claim the Light of Blessing

  1. 01
    Approach the green shrine terminal.
  2. 02
    Interact with it.
  3. 03
    Watch the completion sequence.
  4. 04
    Collect the Light of Blessing.

Items and collectibles directory

Shrine equipment

The following equipment is placed within or associated with the trial:

The exact availability of some ordinary weapons can vary depending on whether the player picks them up, drops them or leaves them in place. They should be treated as shrine-provided equipment rather than permanent rewards.

Materials

Fire Fruits are used for the required burning demonstration. Boulders and rocks are used for breaking cracked stone and for making fused weapons. The spikes and other objects in the combat room are available for experimentation rather than being required by the main route.

The named equipment, materials, enemy and chest contents are recorded in the shrine’s item and enemy directory.

Enemies and combat

Captain Construct I

Captain Construct I is the only named enemy encounter inside In-isa Shrine.

It is positioned in the penultimate room and demonstrates enemy use of Fuse. The Construct can combine a rock with its weapon, creating a stronger tool that is more dangerous than the basic weapons used by earlier tutorial enemies.

If Link is low on health, the safest method is to retreat around the arena and use arrows. The room supplies enough equipment for players who entered with little or no gear.

Factions, characters and ordinary NPCs

Rauru

Rauru appears as a spirit manifestation at the start of the shrine and grants Fuse. This is not a free-roaming NPC encounter. His role is tied to the shrine’s tutorial function and the restoration of Link’s Right Arm.

Rauru-and-Sonia statue

The final chamber contains a statue of Rauru and Sonia. It is a shrine landmark and reward point rather than an ordinary character encounter. Interacting with the terminal in front of it grants the Light of Blessing.

No ordinary residents or businesses

Constructs found in or around the shrine are part of the tutorial environment and enemy design, not a settlement population.

---

Progression and state changes

After completion

The interior is not intended to become a repeatable combat arena. The Construct encounter and tutorial supplies should be treated as fixed shrine content rather than a recurring activity.

Missability

The Arrow x5 chest is optional but can be collected during the first visit. It is not needed for shrine completion. There is no verified permanently missable main reward inside the shrine.

If a player leaves after receiving Fuse but before completing the trial, the shrine remains available for return through fast travel once the entrance has been activated. This is especially useful if the player wants to restock, clear inventory space or approach the Captain Construct with better equipment.

Nearby connections

These locations are connected to In-isa Shrine through Great Sky Island’s tutorial route, but they are separate locations.

Ukouh Shrine

Ukouh Shrine is generally visited first and teaches Ultrahand. Ultrahand is used to make the bridges and raft needed to reach In-isa Shrine.

Great Sky Island lake

The lake lies along the approach route. Logs and a sail allow Link to cross it before reaching the stairs to In-isa Shrine.

Garden of Time

The shrine stands within the southwestern part of this Great Sky Island area. Garden of Time is the broader named area, while In-isa Shrine is the enclosed Shrine of Light within it.

Pondside Cave

Pondside Cave is reached after leaving the In-isa area and travelling towards Gutanbac Shrine. It is not part of In-isa Shrine and should not be counted among its internal rooms or collectibles.

Gutanbac Shrine

Gutanbac Shrine is the next major tutorial shrine in the normal route and teaches Ascend. Completing the Great Sky Island shrine sequence contributes to opening the Temple of Time, but Gutanbac Shrine is not a subarea of In-isa.

Temple of Time

The Temple of Time is the central story location on Great Sky Island. The Closed Door quest begins there, but the Temple of Time is a separate building and progression area.

The wider tutorial sequence links Ukouh, In-isa, Gutanbac and Nachoyah Shrines, but each remains an independent shrine with its own ability and trial.

---

Lore and design significance

In-isa Shrine is a mechanical tutorial disguised as a conventional Shrine of Light. Its three main lessons correspond to the three major forms of Fuse:

The Captain Construct is particularly important because it demonstrates that Fuse is part of the world’s combat language, not merely a special ability reserved for Link. The enemy’s rock-fused weapon mirrors the player’s Boulder Hammer and helps explain why fused equipment is common throughout the game.

The shrine’s Rauru-and-Sonia statue also connects the tutorial’s practical lesson to the broader Zonai and Hyrule story. The trial is therefore both an ability lesson and one of the first places where the game’s ancient imagery becomes part of Link’s progression.

---

Lore and design significance: steps

  1. 01
Weapon fusion: the boulder and Rusty Claymore create a tool for breaking stone.
  2. 02
Arrow fusion: Fire Fruit turns an ordinary arrow into a fire projectile.
  3. 03
Shield and combat fusion: the arena encourages the player to improve defensive equipment while fighting an enemy that uses the same system.
